How do you Listen?

A little bit of research for an upcoming project 'Audio Roulette' with Soundry, a creative listening  laboratory and magazine.

If you have two secs to fill it out that would be great!

Mind Your Ears #1

Workshop #1 with Irish charity Mind Yourself was great fun last week! 5 participants got to grips brilliantly with Audacity, each person creating a small cut-up edit of one of our Sound Stories.

After an initial listening session to one of the stories we found this YouTube video, introducing William Burroughs Cut Up Technique, as a nice way to move past editors block and jump into some quite effective sound work.

Next week we will be working on one person's story, each editor employing the Cut Up technique on a section of the entire recording. This will allow us to collectively re-work an entire sound story and let the randomness of a cut up technique re tell the story's for us.

Collecting Irish stories

I'm working with a London based Irish charity called Mind Yourself, to run a series of sound art workshops that explore the transition of moving from Ireland to England.

We have been collecting stories from Irish people living here in London. They have kindly shared hours of memories, detailing what it is to move from Ireland to England, and what they encountered on their way.

The recordings will be edited in group workshops, using a cut-up technique to layer, re-order, emphasise and obscure. The result will be a series of sonic journeys, from Ireland to London and back agin.

The stories are intended for radio broadcast - 2 stations, one in London and one in Ireland. Both stations are to simultaneously broadcast their sonic journeys creating a wireless whirlpool of memories between the two places.

Every sound work will then be played as a part of a wider event bringing together all of the creative projects by Mind Yourself. The event will take place in 2014.

Participate? Contact me to get involved - lisa_hall_@hotmail.co.uk

If you would  like to share your story to the project we can arrange a Skype interview. It can be as short or as long as you like and your welcome to share any kind of memory about your move from Ireland to the England.

Deconstructing sonic architecture. LISBON ARCHITECTURE TRIENNALE

I was invited to contribute to Radio Civic, a Close, Closer event of Lisbon Architecture Triennale. I chose to respond to the sonic architecture of the location and address audio commands within open public spaces.

12 recordings of bells will be played, tolling on the hour marking out the time. At the start of the festival the bells will be accurate, but over the three months they will start to drift. Each hourly bell will gradually loose its fixed position, finding a new alignment at another time in the day.

--> Listen to the latest Civic Radio broadcast on Sound Cloud.
